Candidates: They Stink

October 23, 2008 · 1 Comment

At risk of delving into politics on an otherwise apolitical blog, I need to rant a bit. Before I proceed, I need to disclose that I am not knowledgeable about how the political game works, I just have some things that are irking me. And, since few people actually read this blog, this seems to be as safe a place as any.

Here are some of my gripes:

  • Neither Barrack Obama nor John McCain is willing to state what they truly believe. Based on his voiting record, National Journal ranked McCain as the 46th most conservative senator in 2006–right at the middle of the pack (ie. McCain’s not a conservative). Using the same method, NJ ranked Obama as the most liberal senator in 2007 (ie. Obama is not a moderate). Yet somehow, you’d never know the candidates true voting records from their stump speeches.
  • Rhetoric, CYA, and a general failure to talk about anything meaningful is a waste of time. The discussion has changed little since the bottom dropped out of the economy. The candidates keep talking like their promises mean something. They don’t, and won’t until the economy turns around and we can recover some of $700+ B we’re investing to save our necks.
  • Palin’s faith is going to create a stumbling block for others. Why? As a public figure, every decision she makes will be viewed under a microscope to see if it balances with what people expect of Christians. She’s bound to screw up (everyone does), but the impact of her screw ups will affect people’s view of Christ. Troopergate, charging the state of Alaska for her family’s travel, and having her husband as a “greeter” in the governor’s office don’t bode well for Palin’s choices (and the press has picked up on the disconnect).

I can continue the list, but you probably get the idea. The fact is, I’m worried about what will happen if either candidate is elected. They both stink. I need to send in my absentee ballot soon. What to do? What to do?
